The very best moxa is known as Gold Moxa because of its golden hue. This moxa comes from the mountains of Japan, where the local variety of Mugwort grows longer “hairs” on the underside of the leaf than the Chinese variety. As many of you know, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Osaka, Japan for a study abroad trip with Kiiko Matsumoto, one of the acupuncture masters I follow and study under.
Furthermore, this device advances scientific research of moxibustion therapy, thanks to the ability to quantify the amount of stimulation. The device has proven to be effective for the treatment of protracted pain and digestive system symptoms in some cases, and it has demonstrated identical effectiveness to older techniques. a) Correlation between the radiative heat conduction rate emitted by the radiation heater and input electric power. Thermography snapshot of a subject's skin heated by the radiation heater. Correlation between skin surface temperature and radiative heat transfer rate.

Minor wheals infrequently developed and cream helped to heal these without scarring. Regarding the press type circular skin needle, no severe adverse events were reported. Direct moxibustion was used in one center in FTLE 2002 without severe adverse event. The estimated marginal means of the 15 items in acupuncture group and the control group are shown. In the acupuncture group, initial high scores of EMM tended to decrease and the scores continued until the end of trial. Figure 4 shows the estimated marginal means of all 15 items of CCQ during the experimental periods. The upper traces are those of acupuncture and the lower ones were those of control groups.
The protocols of these investigations were approved by a local ethics committee of Meiji University of Oriental Medicine. Initial incidences of the subjects with CCD yes and no of the acupuncture and control groups were 28 and 36, respectively. During the experimental period, the survivals of the acupuncture group reduced more rapidly than those of the control but this reversed at the end of the trial. No statistically significant positive effect on the prevention of common cold symptoms was found in the acupuncture group.
The experimental (indirect moxibustion + conventional treatment) and control periods were allocated in random order . During the treatment periods, subjects were treated with indirect moxibustion to Dai-tsui and bilateral Fu-chi 3 times a week. The common cold questionnaire was used to evaluate common cold symptoms. This is a very common occurrence for Japanese acupuncturists, suggesting that the prevention of the symptoms of common cold might be an indication for acupuncture. The mechanisms of action of acupuncture and moxibustion as reported by Japanese researchers are reviewed.
Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines and rheumatism and is an excellent modality for lung congestion – especially bronchitis and asthma. Cupping is the term applied to a technique that uses small glass cups or bamboo jars as suction devices that are placed on the skin. The suction in the cups causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup. Cupping is much like the inverse of massage - rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle pressure to pull them upward. For most patients, this is a particularly relaxing and relieving sensation.

Atsuki Maeda returns to teach the 8th module focusing on the“Essence of Japanese Needle Techniques”. Basic needle techniques of tonification and sedation will be reviewed and refined. A myriad of advanced needle manipulation and guide tube techniques of Sugiyama Waichi will be taught. Students will gain confidence and a clear understanding of how to apply/integrate these needle techniques to deliver the ultimate care to the patient; refining and improving their ability to needle gently and effectively. Caution with patients with neuropathy, skin adhesions in the area, etc. Roll the moxa to a consistient size and pull it off into a football shape - variations can cause a 10 centigrade difference in heat.
Even more interesting, researchers have found that a significant percentage of the body’s available serotonin is produced in the gastrointestinal tract as a by-product of digestion. It’s interesting to compare this ancient perspective with western medical science, which views depression as a deficiency or imbalance in brain chemistry. According to western medicine, one of the most important chemicals supporting our mental and emotional well-being is the neuro-transmitter, serotonin.

Auricular acupuncture, also known as “ear acupuncture,” is an ancient practice. The shape of the ear is likened to a curled up human image, and the acu-points align accordingly. Much like the feet in reflexology, different parts of the ear relate to different parts of the body.

Junji will give an introduction to moxibustion, its functions and indications. This workshop will focus on many of the most widely used techniques as developed by Japanese practitioners, with examples of treatment strategies. Junji will demonstrate all techniques and there will be time for practice and questions. He will cover a variety of treatment strategies, local, whole body , special effect points, autonomic nervous system balancing, needle and moxa combinations etc. We have developed heat conduction treatment devices and radiation heating device capable of controlling temperature with a high degree of precision.
Because of this strong response, the practitioners of Shiraku method are required to have sufficient knowledge of how and when they should or should not apply this method.
